ISLAMABAD: The Federal Review Board (FRB) of the Supreme Court (SC) has extended the detention period of outlawed Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) chief Saad Rizvi for one month, a day after the Lahore High Court (LHC) declared his detention illegal.

The federal review board held a virtual meeting in Karachi and discussed the issue of the detention of Saad Rizvi. The apex court has informed Additional Chief Secretary Home Department, Punjab about the decision of on the extension of Saad Rizvi’s detention.

The TLP chief Saad Rizvi has been lodged in the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. On September 29, Deputy Commissioner Lahore wrote a letter to the Federal Review Board to review the matter regarding the detention of the TLP chief Hafiz Saad Rizvi.

Lahore High Court on Friday had overturned the order for detention of TLP chief Saad Rizvi, son of late Khadim Hussain Rizvi.

Accepting an application filed by Saad Rizvi’s uncle Ameer Hussain, LHC’s Justice Tariq Saleem Sheikh declared the TLP chief’s issued a bried orded and declared the detention as invalid. The court issued its ruling after hearing the completion of arguments put forward by the lawyers of both sides.

Earlier, the Provincial Review Board had rejected the government’s application for extension in Saad Rizvi’s detention. It also dismissed the government’s plea under the Maintence of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.

After the rejection of extension in detention, the government had again detained Saad Rizvi on July 10 under Anti-Terrorism Act. Rizvi was taken into custody on April 12 for 90 days for inciting his followers to violence.

His uncle Ameer Hussain had filed the petition maintaining that Saad Rizvi’s detention was extended after a review board of the high court’s judges turned down the government request to extend the detention of Rizvi under the MPO Ordinance 1960. He asked the court to declare the act of the government illegal and order the release of Rizvi.
