KARACHI: Several parts of Karachi reported a power outage on Wednesday evening, which was caused by the tripping of an extra high tension (EHT) transmission line in Sindh’s Jamshoro district, the city’s power utility K-Electric said.

According to several media reports, around 80% of Karachi’s areas lost power, with 1,400 of 1,900 feeders having tripped. The areas to lose power include Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Federal B Area, Saddar, Malir, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Clifton and Defence.

K-Electric, the utility company responsible for electricity supply in the metropolis, initially said it had received reports of power outages from multiple areas and was “actively monitoring” the situation.

In an update, K-Electric said power supply to Karachi was disrupted due to the tripping of an EHT transmission line in Jamshoro which caused a disconnection between the circuits of KE and the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC).

The power utility, however, said that its plants are on “island mode”, which is why power restoration is “underway at a quick pace” and contact with the national grid has also been restored.

“All KE teams are on high alert and were making efforts to restore electricity supply”, a spokesperson for the company said. Earlier, an update from the Ministry of Energy at 5:19pm revealed that power supply to KE from NTDC has been restored.

A similar breakdown occurred in Karachi in May after a high-tension transmission line of 220 kV tripped, affecting the supply of electricity to the associated grids. A massive power breakdown took place at the start of the year, plunging the entire country into darkness.

A lot of Karachi neighbourhoods reported drizzling. The Met department has forecast rainfall for Karachi till September 3. The city is expected to receive heavy rains, dust storms and thunderstorms on September 2 and 3, said Director Met Department Sardar Sarfaraz.
