Pakistan reports 4,455 COVID-19 cases, 68 deaths

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reported 4,455 coronavirus cases and 68 deaths on Sunday, as the situation continues to worsen amid the fourth wave despite the tightening restrictions.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 4,455 cases and 68 deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,063,125 while the death toll stands at 23,797.

The positivity ratio was recorded at 8.09%. There were 55,002 tests conducted in the previous day leading to new cases. The number of active cases in the country has also increased to 82,076 as the situation worsens amid across the country.

There are 4,275 people who remain in critical condition including 118 new patients in the previous day. Overall 959,491 people have recovered from the virus, including 4,780 in the past day.

Sindh has recorded the highest number of cases and remains the worst affected region. The province has recorded 398,745 cases and 6,189 deaths while the number of active cases has reached 47,525.

Punjab has recorded 363,644 cases and 11,194 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province has reached 17,731. Islamabad has recorded 90.503 cases and 814 deaths while there are 4,803 active cases in the federal capital.

The number of cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 147,973 and 4,540 deaths while Balochistan has recorded 31,138 cases and 331 deaths. Gilgit Baltistan had recorded 8,703 cases and 152 deaths while Azad Kashmir has recorded 26,874 cases and 645 deaths.

End lockdown in Sindh

The NCOC has announced to lift the ‘partial’ lockdown imposed in Sindh to contain the fourth wave of the novel coronavirus from August 9 while continuing with other restrictions on movement.

According to a statement, Karachi and Hyderabad will face new restrictions on movement from August 9. The Sindh government has announced to impose lockdown from July 31 until August 8 in the province.

The NCOC said implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) should be improved at the beginning of Muharram besides also emphasizing the need to adopt a smart lockdown strategy.

“Smart lockdown should be imposed in areas witnessing higher COVID-19 positivity ratio,” the health body said while also lauding the Sindh government’s measures that helped improve the vaccination process.
