Pakistan record 2,545 new COVID-19 cases, positivity ratio crosses 5%

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recorded 2,545 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, while the positivity ratio crossed more than five percent as the situation worsens amid the fourth wave.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 2,545 cases and 47 deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 981,392 while the death toll stands at 22,689.

The positivity ratio has spiked to 5.2% in the previous day. There are 2,336 people in critical condition including 78 new patients yesterday. There were 48,910 tests conducted in the previous day leading to new cases. The number of active cases in the country has also increased to 42,330. Overall 916,373 people have recovered from the virus, including 1,030 in the past day.

Sindh has overtaken Punjab with the highest number of cases which have been gradually rising amid the presence of the Delta variant. Sindh has recorded 351,006 cases and 5,647 deaths so far. The province has seen a recent spike and the number of active cases has surged to 26,563.

Punjab has recorded 349,111 cases and 10,852 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province has reached 9,056. Islamabad has recorded 84,083 cases and 787 deaths while there are 1,788 active cases in the federal capital.

The number of cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 139,960 and 4,377 deaths while Balochistan has recorded 28,588 cases and 317 deaths. Gilgit Baltistan had recorded 7,163 cases and 113 death while Azad Kashmir has recorded 21,481 cases and 596 deaths.

Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar has sounded alarm over the rising number of cases, saying that COVID-19 hospital admissions and number of critical patients are rising rapidly.

“Rapid build up starting to take place in covid patients hospital inflow, as well as patients in critical care. This indian variant has caused devastation in countries in the region,” said Umar. He appealed to people to follow SOPs and get vaccinated as soon as possible.
