KARACHI: The administration of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) has levelled serious allegations of alleged corruption and irregularities on former Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh.
According to a letter issued by Director Finance Ghulam Ali, a copy of which is available with M.M News, it was alleged that Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh owes Rs 12.5 million in terms of excess salaries which are yet to be recovered.
The letter states that a meeting of the Departmental Accounts Committee (DAC) was held on April 11, in which decisions were taken with reference to the Audit Inspection Report (AIR) for the financial year 2019-2020 and objections were raised on your excess salaries.
“The reply of the management was not convincing. The person cannot set his own salaries, perks and privileges. The DAC directed to work out the salary with TTS and MP scale and the differences in pay as Vice Chancellorship may be recovered from his (Muhammad Ali Shaikh) pension,” it added.
“It has been decided in the meeting that the duration of your excess salaries is from 20th February 2012 to 17th August 2021. Therefore, deduction will start from your June 2021 pension,” the letter further added.
When contacted in this regard, Muhammad Ali Sheikh rejected the allegations, saying that the meeting mentioned in the letter has no value as “such meetings should be chaired by the Secretary Board and Universities whereas here the meeting was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor”.
The former vice-chancellor said, “I am surprised that my opinion was not taken in this regard,” adding, “I did not increase my salary myself but it was the decision of the syndicate.”
It is worth mentioning here that Dr Muhammad Ali Sheikh, former Vice-Chancellor of SMIU, has been accused of corruption, irregularities and misuse of authority.
In the General Provident (GP) fund, he had made about 5,000 monthly deductions from the salaries of over 350 employees for eight years, of which no record was given to the teachers and employees.
