KARACHI: Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed met with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah in Karachi on Thursday and discussed the prevailing law and order situation in the province.
The interior secretary, Sindh chief secretary and Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh were present in the meeting. They also discussed the ongoing operation in Shikarpur in which at least policemen have lost their lives.
The chief minister maintained that the law and order situation had also worsened in Karachi. He said people used to travel in convoys in Sindh due to the threat of getting robbed but the PPP government cleared highways of dacoits in 2007 by launching a grand operation.
CM Sindh that bandits attacked the armoured personnel carriers (APCs) of police in Shikarpur which killed two policemen. He pointed out that police had recovered eight hostages from the criminals.
“You are the interior minister. You can come here whenever you want,” the chief minister was reported as saying. “We will work together and we welcome you in Sindh.”
Sheikh Rasheed assured the chief minister of extending all possible cooperation. He said Rangers are at their disposal the Sindh government can utilize the services of the paramilitary. He said that terrorism cases should be registered against the dacoits.
CM Murad further asked the interior minister’s assistance for the procurement of necessary equipment for the security forces. He vowed they will cleanse the area of bandits and urged the federal government to provide air support and armed boats for the operation.
Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed arrived in Karachi yesterday on the directions of the prime minister to review the law and order situation in the province.
The minister was briefed over the law and order situation with Director-General Pakistan Rangers Sindh Major General Iftikhar Hassan Chaudhry.
Sheikh Rasheed commended the steps taken to maintain law and order in Karachi. He said further necessary steps will be taken to protect the lives and property of the people. He said that federal government will ensure the provision of necessary resources to law enforcement agencies.
