RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Army’s top brass has taken serious notice of the recent cross-border firing incidents, asking the Afghan government to take effective border control steps to thwart the regrouping of terrorist leadership and outfits.

As per details, the concern was expressed during the 241st Corps Commanders meeting chaired by Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa at the General Headquarters, Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

An Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said Army’s top brass, taking serious note of the recent cross-border firing incidents emanating from Afghanistan and regrouping of terrorist leadership and outfits across the border, meeting expressed the hope that Afghanistan’s soil will not be used against Pakistan.

“In light of emerging regional security situation, Pakistan has taken valuable border management steps and the same is expected from Afghanistan to deny any space to spoilers of peace,” the forum stressed.

The commanders undertook a comprehensive review of the global, regional and domestic security environment with particular focus on the situation along the borders especially the Line of Control/Working Boundary and Pak-Afghan border, said the military’s wing.

While reviewing recent developments in the Afghan peace process and its attendant effects on the security situation, especially along the Pak-Afghan border, the forum reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for regional peace and stability.

The ISPR further said that the meeting was apprised of the evolving operational imperatives and corresponding strategies to meet upcoming challenges. Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed satisfaction over the Army’s operational readiness in view of the emerging security threats.

The commanders’ review comes three days after a Pakistani soldier was martyred in an exchange of fire with Afghanistan-based terrorists in the North Waziristan tribal district.

Pakistan has consistently asked Afghanistan to make sure effective management and control on its side of the Pakistan-Afghan border. Such attacks are common as earlier on May 22 a soldier was martyred after terrorists opened fire from across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border near North Waziristan, the military’s media affairs wing had said.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistani troops responded to the firing — on a military post — in a befitting manner, but Sepoy Umar Daraz, 32, resident of Jhang, received a bullet injury and embraced martyrdom.

“Pakistan has consistently asked Afghanistan to ensure effective management and control on their side of the Pak-Afghan Border,” ISPR said. Pakistan strongly condemns terrorists’ continuous use of Afghan soil for activities against Pakistan, the military’s media wing added.

A Frontier Corps (FC) soldier had embraced martyrdom and two others sustained injuries during the cross-border fire from Afghanistan on November 3, 2020.

According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), terrorists targeted a security forces border post in the Manzakai sector of Zhob from across the border in Afghanistan. As a result, a 22-year-old FC soldier, Naik Fakhr Abbas, martyred while two soldiers suffered injuries.

ISPR further said that Pakistan has been consistently raising the issue of effective border management on the Afghan side with Afghanistan authorities and keeping a check on cross-border terrorist incidents.

On October 17, 2020, a Pakistan army soldier embraced martyrdom while three others sustained injuries in a terrorist attack near Balochistan’s Turbat.

According to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the terrorists opened fire on a security forces’ patrolling party near Jhaki post, 35 kilometers southeast of Turbat.

As a result, an exchange of fire occurred which resulted in the martyrdom of Lance Naik Waseem Ullah and injuries to three other soldiers, added the ISPR.

A Pakistani soldier was martyred at a military post in the Bajur sector during firing from across the border in Afghanistan On September 22, 2020.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 24-year-old sepoy Sabir Shah embraced martyrdom due to the firing from across the border in the Bajur sector on an army post along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
