LAHORE: A banking court today (Saturday) extended the interim bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen, his son Ali Tareen and others till May 3 in a money laundering case.
According to details, Jahangir Tareen and his son appeared for the extension of the bail along with over two dozen Punjab lawmakers from the ruling PTI. Judge Ameer Muhammad Khan heard the case.
During the hearing, Jahangir’s counsel told the court that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sent them a call-up notice on April 14 and sought various records.
“My client couldn’t provide the records at a day’s notice,” he added and vowed to provide the same on April 19. The court directed the Investigation Agency to complete the investigation into the case at the earliest.
Talking to media outside the banking, Tareen said there was constant talk of the sugar mafia and the price of sugar going up. “I have nothing to do with the increase sugar price or the sugar mafia,” he added.
He called for people to read the three FIRs against him, saying there is no mention of sugar in any of them or any allegation. “All three FIRs did not mention the rise in the price of sugar, but the FIRs picked up things relating to my business from eight to 10 years ago,” he said.
The FIA have registered two separate cases against father, son duo over the charges of committing fraud and money-laundering worth Rs3.14 billion. The cases against them were registered under PPC Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating of public shareholders) and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), read with Sections 3/4 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
