ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to monitor the Billion Tree Tsunami project through satellite.
In this regard, a monitoring agreement was signed between the Ministry of Climate Change and the Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on Monday.
The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam said that SUPARCO would also ensure the transparency of the project.
According to the Climate Change Adviser, the ‘Ten Billion Tsunami Project’ will create 1.5 million jobs in the next four years.
He said the government is prioritizing afforestation activities as trees have been recognized as the most effective and cheapest way to tackle the effects of climate change on socio-political sectors such as agriculture, water, energy, and health.
A large section of forests has been lost to logging, degradation and climate crisis which must be reclaimed, he added.
Prime Minister Imran Khan’s initiative to plant 10 billion trees to make Pakistan greener and mitigate the effects of climate change has been lauded by different countries.
According to government reports, In 2014, the KP government had launched the Billion Tree Tsunami Afforestation Project, which was monitored by WWF-Pakistan.
In 2019, about 1.6 million native tree species were planted in different cities of Pakistan by WWF and about 1.002 million native plants were planted with the provincial forest department, academic institutions and civil society.
