KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) landed in trouble after a song about the party founder Altaf Hussain was played during the inauguration of an election office
The song was played moments after MQM-P leader Amir Khan inaugurated the office in the PIA Cooperative Housing Society of Gulistan-e-Jauhar area on Tuesday evening. A large number of party workers and supporters were present at the ceremony.
A party anthem that includes the name of the MQM founder started playing in the office. MQM-P activists questioned the sound system operators how they ended up playing the party founder’s anthem. The election office was later sealed by security officials and the sound system was confiscated.
Altaf Hussain was a powerful figure in Karachi until he was sidelined from politics after his incendiary speech on August 22, 2016, during which he chanted anti-Pakistan slogans and incited party workers to attack media offices in Karachi.
Many prominent leaders distanced themselves and announced that the party would now be operated from Pakistan and not from London. A new faction named MQM-Pakistan was subsequently formed.
