KARACHI: Sindh local government has announced to demolish structures built along Gujjar Nullah in a major anti-encroachment drive to begin next month.
According to sources, the operation is set to begin from the early days of next month and it’s decided to construct boundary walls, footpath, and the streets across the nullas as well.
In various places, the nullah channels will be restructured and straightened up to speed the water stream as well while other than making them deeper and broader, the sewers and will be cleaned of chocking as well.
At various points, the nullah will be broadened to 60- to 80 feet during the operation, sources added. According to sources, “About 4,000 houses are feared to be damaged in the rehabilitation of Gujjar drain and over 20,000 people may be affected by the operation against encroachments”, sources said.
It has also been decided to write a letter to the heads of security agencies for foolproof security before starting the operation.
The authorities claim to have cleared a more than 24-km stretch of the Gujjar Nala during the past few months after the KMC’s anti-encroachment wing launched the drive under directives from chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
The operation against illegal structures on the Gujjar Nala had launched over a year ago that initially prompted a strong reaction from the residents and those occupying land for commercial use.
