KARACHI: Renowned social media celebrity and TV host Waqar Zaka has announced to form an association for digital currency holders and will apply again in Sindh High Court to get permission for all of them.
Talking to journalists, Waqar Zaka was of the view that the FIA takes action against the people on its own, the SBP is not opening a bitcoin account. “I would form an association for the digital currency holders,” the celebrity announced.
Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court (SHC) today (Thursday) directed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) not to take any corrosive action against any digital currency or Bitcoins’ holders in Pakistan.
An SHC bench headed by Justice Amjad Ali Sahito heard a petition seeking removal of a ban on digital cryptocurrency, filed by Waqar Zaka. The court expressed frustration with the FIA and Assistant Attorney General Gulfraz Khattak for not submitting a reply.
The Sindh High Court also issued a show-cause notice to Deputy Director FIA Cyber Crime for non-appearance in court. The court further directed the Federal Secretary of Finance to appear in person before the court on the next date of hearing.
“Why is the agency taking action when it has no jurisdiction to do so?” questioned Justice Amjad. The SHC barred the FIA from harassing citizens until the completion of a probe against them.
In a written reply submitted in the case, the Central Bank had opposed the use of digital currency in the country, saying that it has already issued an advisory warning against trade in virtual currency as it is not legal tender.
