KARACHI: Expressing concerns over the Sindh government’s failure to arrest the assassins of Maulana Dr Adil Khan, religious leaders of the Deobandi school of thought have announced a country-wide peaceful strike on Friday.

While addressing a press conference today religious leaders, including Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqi, Qari Allah Dad, Maulana Hamad Madani, Allama Taj Muhammad Hanafi, under the banner of Karachi Ulema Committee (KUC), said that no concrete measures could be witnessed on the ground to arrest the killers of Adil Khan.

They said that they were assured of their complete cooperation by traders and transporters during the strike. “We are patriotic citizens of the country and have not resorted to any sort of violence,” they added.

While expressing their dissatisfaction over the investigation team formed by the concerned authorities to probe the matter, they said that despite their 48-hour deadline to arrest the perpetrators, no progress is being made in this regard.

Sindh police has constituted a four-member high-level inquiry committee to probe into the killing of renowned religious scholar Maulana Dr Adil Khan.

According to police sources, the Sindh inspector general of police has formed the inquiry committee headed by Karachi police chief Additional IG Ghulam Nabi Memon.

The committee also includes Counter-Terrorism Department’s (CTD) DIG Omar Shahid, DIG east and SSP Korangi. Police sources said that the committee will submit its progress report to the IG on the daily basis.

On October 11, Police had made progress during a probe into the targeted killing of renowned cleric Maulana Adil Khan of Jamia Farooqia in Karachi.

According to the initial probe report by police, a new weapon had been used in the firing incident and only one of the attackers had opened fire on the victims.

“The firing was carried out from a distance of eight feet,” the investigators had found. They had said that the attackers involved in the incident were between the ages of 20 to 25.

On October 10, renowned religions scholar Moulana Adil Khan and his driver were killed by unidentified armed men in Karachi.

Police said that when the cleric’s vehicle stopped in front of a busy shopping area, attackers opened fire targeting the driver before firing three bullets that struck Khan’s head, neck and chest.

Khan was rushed to a private hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, said the hospital’s spokesperson Anjum Rizvi. Police said the driver died before reaching Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center.
