ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has assured that Pakistan is strongly committed to the protection and preservation of biodiversity.
The prime minister was addressing virtually the United Nations Summit on Biodiversity at Heads of State and Government level which he co-chaired with the leaders of several countries.
PM Imran Khan said Pakistan is among the top 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change, hence the government has taken up the challenge of planting 10 billion trees with the help of local communities to preserve the country’s valued biodiversity.
He said the government has also increased national parks from 30 to 39 in two years as part of the ‘Protected Areas Initiative’ launched during the COVID-19 era. He underlined the urgent need to accelerate action on biodiversity for sustainable development.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan visited the Satellite Ground Station of Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) in Islamabad.
He was briefed about SUPARCO’s achievements in developing indigenous capabilities in space, science and technology and its contributions towards strengthening national security as well as socio-economic development of the country.
During the visit to various technical facilities and interaction with SUPARCO’s engineers and scientists, Prime Minister reiterated that all available resources will be utilized in further strengthening strategic capabilities to preserve the sovereignty of the country.
He emphasised that Pakistan’s nuclear and strategic capability is safe and secure under a robust command and control system. He vowed to strengthen our strategic capability to safeguard vital national interests.
While recognizing the significant role of space technology, he assured requisite support for expansion of space-based services and infrastructure to give impetus to National Space Programme-2047 for socio-economic development.
