RAWALPINDI: Frontier Works Organization FWO, a military engineering body, will plant one million saplings along the motorways across the country.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), FWO, under its green motorway initiative, will plant 600,000 saplings along the Islamabad motorway, 180,000 saplings along the Karachi-Hyderabad motorway, 120,000 saplings along the Lahore-Sialkot motorway and 100,000 saplings along the Swat motorway.
ISPR further said Army had planted over 29 million saplings across the country since 2018, adding that over 5 million saplings had been planted in various parts of the country during the recent monsoon drive.
Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa planted a sapling under the “Sarsabz-o-Shadab Pakistan” drive, ISPR said.
On August 10, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) had announced to plant three million saplings at airports across the country during the ongoing monsoon tree plantation campaign.
Aviation Secretary Hassan Nasir Jamy had said that CAA had planted over 100,000 saplings at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, adding that 300,000 saplings will be planted at the airport during the plantation drive.
CAA director-general and aviation secretary had inaugurated the monsoon tree plantation drive at the Karachi airport.
Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan had launched the country’s biggest tree plantation campaign. Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, the Prime Minister had thanked the people who participated in today’s tree plantation drive. “It is the responsibility of all of us to make our country green for our further generation,” he stated.
PM Imran pointed out that Pakistan ranks in the top ten countries most affected by climate change. “Pakistan is facing major issues due to climate change including the reduction in wheat production and unprecedented rainfall,” he added.
Commenting on the plantation drive, he said, “We have started the process of planting more trees to make the country green. We are doing it for our future generation.
“The 3.5 million saplings that we have planted today is just the beginning,” he added, vowing that trees would be planted in empty spaces across the country. He also urged the women of Pakistan to participate in the tree plantation drive.
