LAHORE: Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umar Sheikh has blamed the woman, a victim of yesterday’s motorway gang-rape for choosing the wrong route.
Talking to a private news channel, the Lahore CCPO said that the victim should have checked her petrol tank before getting on the said route. “The woman had left Lahore’s Defence area at 12:30am for Gujranwala,” he added.
“I am surprised. A mother of three, a lone driver after leaving Defence should have taken the straight route from GT Road — a generally well-populated area,” he remarked. The Lahore CCPO is set to lead the investigation of the gruesome incident.
In this regard, Human Rights Minister Dr Shireen Mazari criticised Lahore CCPO for blaming a woman for getting raped. “Nothing can rationalise the crime of rape,” She remarked.
“For an officer to effectively blame a woman for being gang-raped by saying she should have taken the GT Road or question as to why she went out in the night with her children is unacceptable. I have taken up this issue,” she added.

Earlier, Police arrested 12 suspects for allegedly raping a woman near a motorway in Lahore. Two separate special teams headed by SSPIA and Divisional SP were formed while DIG Investigation Lahore is overseeing all matters related to the investigation of the case.

Shahbaz Gul said that CCPO Lahore was leading the investigation team on the direction of Buzdar while role policing techniques were being used in the investigation. The investigation is being carried out with the help of detectives, CCTV footage, and DNA.
