KARACHI: At least two died and several others injured after a four-storey residential building collapsed in Karachi’s Korangi area today (Thursday).
According to details, medical treatment is being provided to those pulled out from the rubble. Women and children are among those injured. One of the injured has been shifted to Indus Hospital. Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Director Dr. Seemin Jamali said informed that one of the victims was 15 years old.
Police said that the building was located near Rasheedia Masjid in Allah Wala Town Korangi. Rescue officers have informed that many people are trapped under the rubble of the building and efforts are underway to rescue them.
Sindh Building Control Authority (SCBA) Korangi Director said that the building was constructed illegally without any approval or map. “The building was constructed on China-cutting land,” he added.
Personnel from the army’s Engineering Corps have also arrived at the location and have cordoned off the area. A large crane has also been brought to the site to remove the rubble.
The district administration claimed that the multi-storey building had started sinking into the ground and had been emptied on the orders of the deputy commissioner two days ago.
This is the third such incident to have taken place in the metropolis this year. In June, a five-storey building collapsed in Lyari resulting in the death of at least 18 people.
Earlier in March, a building collapsed in the Gulbahar area killing 27 people and injuring at least 17 others.
The civic administration asked the provincial authorities to delist more than 50 ‘dangerous’ buildings from the list of structures so that these could be demolished for public safety.
