ISLAMABAD: An artificial flour crisis has ensued in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi as people struggle to get the basic commodity.
The flour mills’ owners have increased the prices in many adjoining areas of the city including Sarai Kharboza, Shaheenabad, Golra Mor, Chistianabad, Nasirabad, Shams Colony, Awan Town, Misriya and Dhoke Sayedan.
Citizens have complained that the District Food Control Authority has failed to ensure the supply of flour. 75 flour mills are receiving wheat from the government’s quota but have been unable to increase the supply of flour.
The shortage has exposed the nexus between the flour mills’ owners and the District Food Control Authority. It has also been revealed that a large quantity of wheat has been smuggled from the region and handfull of flour bags are being supplied to give an impression that the flour is available.
Flour is being sold at Rs75 per kilogramme in many parts of the city, leaving residents worried about the availability and affordability of the commodity. This has compelled locals to purchase the basic staple at exorbitant rates.
The residents have urged higher authorities to take notice of the artificial shortage and ensure the supply of the product. When contacted food controller Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq dismissed the impression of any shorage and said the commodity was readily available in the market.
