ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan today (Monday) has urged the United Nations to play its rightful role in addressing the grave situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir (IoK).
The views came during the meeting with the United Nations General Assembly President-elect Volkan Bozkir in Islamabad. Volkan Bozkir arrived in Pakistan on Sunday on a two day-official on the invitation of the government.
During the meeting, PM Imran extended warm felicitations to Bozkir on his election as president of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly. The premier further urged the international body should ensure that the people of the valley exercise their right to self-determination as promised under the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
According to a press release, “The Prime Minister highlighted the dire human rights and humanitarian situation in IIOJK since 5 August 2019, as well as the ongoing gross and systematic violations of human rights of the Kashmiri people and the attempts to change the demographic structure of the occupied territory.”
The Prime Minister also briefed the President-elect of the UNGA about the federal government’s measures to mitigate and suppress the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 pandemic.
He further informed that the federal government had deployed an $8 billion stimulus package for the poor segment of society, which was the highest social security coverage by any government in the history of Pakistan.
The premier also highlighted his call for the ‘Global Initiative on Debt Relief’ and stressed the need to provide greater fiscal space to the developing countries to overcome the economic impacts of the ongoing pandemic.
“The Prime Minister also expressed the hope that the 75th Session of the UNGA would accord priority to these issues, which affect billions around the world,” the press release concluded.
