KARACHI: At least 11 people have now died in separate rain-related incidents in the metropolis during the current monsoon spell as Karachi again received moderate showers for the third consecutive day today (Saturday).
According to details, almost 8 people, including two children, were killed due to electrocution while a 12-year-old boy died after drowning in a canal near Bhains Colony in Karachi’s Surjani Town.
In another incident, two members of a family died when the roof of the house collapsed in the Lyari’s Jahanabad area. Health officials informed that the roof collapsed due to heavy rains. Malir Nadi was flooded and traffic was stuck from Qayyumabad to Korangi Causeway due to rainwater.
Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMCs), District Municipal Corporations (DMCs), the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Sindh government and the Pakistan Army are assisting relief activities throughout the port city.
Due to the monsoon spell, several parts of the metropolis have been deprived of electricity on third day. Many feeders and PMTs have been tripped in Karachi after a downpour caused a massive power breakdown in the city.
The areas facing power outages include Saddar, M.A. Jinnah Road, Khudadad Colony, Qayyumabad, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulistan-e-Johar, Korangi, Quaidabad, Gulbahar, Federal B Area, North Karachi, New Karachi, Liaquatabad, PECHS, Defence, Keamari, Lyari, Soldier Bazaar, Malir, Landhi, and North Nazimabad.
In this regard, K-Electric informed that the staff was unable to restore power due to standing water in some low-lying areas. “Restoring electricity in areas with standing water can lead to loss of life,” he added.
Pakistan Meteorological Department has informed that the rain is expected to continue till tonight. Light rain is expected in Karachi tomorrow.
