ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Accountability, Shahzad Akbar has informed that the government agencies will take action on the sugar and wheat commission reports.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today (Friday), Shahzad Akbar informed that a committee headed by Hamad Azhar was working on sugar prices and another committee of the Sugar Advisory Board would review the sugar policy.
The Special Assistant said, “The Competition Commission has been asked to take action within 90 days. On the other hand, State Bank of Pakistan will take action on irregularities in loans given to sugar mills.”
He further said that a joint investigation team of FIA and SECP would investigate corporate fraud and fake sugar imports. “National Accountability Bureau would investigate subsidies given on sugar over the past five years,” he added.
Shahzad Akbar has urged the people of Pakistan to stop purchasing sugar at exorbitant prices. “Efforts are being made to ensure that the price of sugar does not exceed Rs70,” he assured.
Referring to the flour crisis, Shahzad Akbar said that the commission had made several recommendations and the report had identified thefts. “So far, 149 flour mills have been found involved in thefts and Rs190 million have been recovered from them,” he claimed.
