KARACHI: As many as 171 officers and personnel of the Sindh police have tested positive for the COVID-19 over the past two days.
According to a spokesman for Sindh Police, as of Saturday, a total of 2,096 police personnel in the province have tested positive for the deadly virus while 16 deaths have been recorded.
The deadly COVID-19 has remained rampant among the officers and personnel as they remain in the line of duty during the plague.
The spokesperson further said 496 cops have recovered from the virus and 1584 of them remain under treatment across the province. Of the deceased, 14 hailed from Karachi while two were from Hyderabad Police Range.
Earlier, three police officers succumbed to the deadly COVID-19 in the province, identified, SP Shakeel from Malir complaint center in-charge, Special Security Unit (SSU) DSP Ahmad Nawaz and ASI Abdul Rahim.
In June, Karachi AIG Ghulam Nabi Memon issued orders for an isolation center to be set up at the Sindh Police Hospital in Garden, in order to treat police personnel infected with COVID-19.
Ensuring the implementation of SOPs and other directives during the pandemic, police personnel have been at the forefront in the fight against the COVID-19. For the most part, officers have remained on duty without being provided personal protective gear initially.
“Corona-affected personnel is being fully cared for and special steps are being taken on a daily basis”, the spokesman added. The novel COVID-19 has claimed 34 more lives and infected 1,452 people during the past 24 hours in Sindh.
In a statement on the COVID-19 situation, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that 34 more people succumbed to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll from the disease to 1747.
He said that 10,815 samples were tested today, which detected 1,452 new cases of COVID-19. The chief minister maintained that so far 564,491 tests had been conducted in the province.
