KARACHI: Market Committee is allegedly involved in Rs 80m corruption. New Sabzi Mandi of the metropolis has been deprived of basic amenities for the past 17 years.
According to details, the management of the market committee has looted the local shopkeepers of the New Sabzi Mandi in the name of electricity connections.
The District Council’s Market Committee is responsible for providing basic facilities to the local traders. Due to the alleged corruption, the New Sabzi Mandi is still deprived of electricity, water, and gas.
Relevant sources informed that the Market Committee had collected Rs 100 million in the name of electricity meter from almost 4,000 shops of New Sabzi Mandi. However, no action in this regard was taken yet.
The market committee had not solved the electricity problem to date and the entire market was running on an illegal ‘Kunda’ system. In 2017, K-Electric removed all the illegal Kundas, after which the local traders are suffering to date.
Sources further informed that the market committee also collected money from the traders for cleaning purposes. However, no such thing happened in the Sabzi Mandi. Due to the heavy rain yesterday, gutters were seen overflowing, which has disrupted the business of local traders.
Sources also said that several political leaders are patronizing the officers of the market committee. One of the traders informed that due to the mismanagement, the businesses have been disturbed badly.
