Allama Talib Jauhari was a prominent and distinguished Pakistani Islamic scholar, religious leader, public speaker, Urdu poet and philosopher from the ‘Shia’ sect of Islam who holds the prestigious position among both sects Shia and Sunni on different TV channels, including Pakistan Television for many decades.
Early life-Education
Allama Talib Jauhari was born on August 27, 1938. His father Maulana Muhammad Mustafa Jauhar was a prominent scholar and Urdu poet known for his poetry related to the family of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
In 1949 he migrated to Pakistan along with his father. Later he left for Najaf, Iraq, where he studied religion for a full ten years under the tutelage of renowned Shia scholars of the time.
Talib Jauhari studied Islamic theology in Najaf, Iraq under Ayatollah Abu al-Qasim al-Khoi. His book ‘Hadees-e-Karbala’ is considered as one of the most well-compiled sources related to the event of Karbala.
He had long held an esteemed position among Shia scholars of Pakistan. He was known as a philosopher and had written several books. He was respected widely for the ‘Shaam-e-Ghareeban’ gatherings in Nishtar Park during the month of Muharram.
Apart from being a master orator, he was also a prolific writer. He wrote several books, including detailed commentary on the Holy Quran. He was also a poet and had published three compilations of his poetry.
Extraordinary speaker
He was an outstanding speaker on different themes of Islam for many decades. He had delivered speeches all over the world on Islamic themes particularly with the reference of the Ahl al-Bayt (Household) of Muhammad (PBUH).
Along with being an extraordinary speaker, Allama Talib Jauhri is a prolific writer, philosopher and poet as well. He successfully relates Islamic ideas with modern political and philosophical thought.
The promoter of Shia Sunni unity
Talib Jauhari supported ethnic and sectarian harmony his sermons used to be composed on the observance of Allah’s orders, pursuing the way of Prophet Muhammad and love and respect for Ahlybait.
He was not only respected among the ‘Shia’ community in the Indo-Pak Subcontinent but Sunnis also like to attend his lectures due to his Tafseer-e-Quran in a logical way.
He is also a promoter of Shia Sunni unity in Pakistan. He was always considered as a symbol of cross-sect unity in the Muslims and his lectures are famous amongst all the sects of Muslims.
People including men, women and youths love him and look him as one of the most respected moderate religious scholars in the country. He had always condemned terrorism and violence in his speeches. A message of love and unity can be found in his speeches always.
Writer, poet and philosopher of his ear
He wrote several books, including detailed commentary on the Quran. His various books based on his speeches had been published. His book “Alamat e Zahoor e Mehdi” is considered as one of the most comprehensive books compiled and written on the topic of Imam Mehdi in the Urdu language.
He was also a poet, and three compilations of his poetry were published during his lifetime. His book Hadees-e-Karbala is one of the few ‘Maqtal’ written in Urdu and had been considered as one of the most well-compiled sources to the traditions related to the event of Karbala. His narration of the tragedy of Karbala is popular among Shias and Sunnis.
Died at the age of 81
Talib Jauhri passed away in Karachi in the early hours of Monday. He was 81 years old. The news of his passing has been met with sadness and grief by his followers.
He had been under treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital and was placed on a ventilator for the past few days. His scholastic work and speeches about Islam and Karbala will remain an asset for the upcoming generation.
