KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has launched an investigation against two officials of the Karachi Metropolitan Municipality (KMC) for corrupt activities.
The investigation has been launched against KMC Chief Engineer Najeeb Ahmed and Additional Director Mazhar Sheikh. NAB Karachi sought service records, personal files, passports, and bank account details of the accused officers.
According to sources, some of the political officials were using the two officers to gain illegal promotions and benefits. the officials belonged to MQM London, the sources revealed. Anonymous (Benami) assets will also be investigated in this case in which the two corrupt officials were involved in collecting under different names.
NAB has also launched an investigation into their frequent trips abroad, which helped the bureau in obtaining a lot of information against the accused. Following the step, the NAB has not only launched an inquiry against the two but has also written a letter to the Metropolitan Commissioner seeking details in the matter.
In the direction of the Department of Human Resource Management, KMC has filed a particular file with the names of both the officers. The department has also issued a letter No.Sr.Dir(HRM)/KMC/2020/1160 seeking service book and passport and the details of both accused.
It is to be noted that many officers in KMC have dual citizenship and they often travel abroad, however, the letter issued by the NAB letter has caused a stressful situation in the KMC.
Masood Alam, seen as the right-hand of Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar, is also included in the list of those who travel abroad frequently and also hold dual nationality.
