WASHINGTON: Amid the ongoing pandemic, watching the medical thriller movie ‘Contagion’ released in 2011 is healthier than watching the news.
Dr. Pamela Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Research Center said that watching such thriller movies is a healthier option than watching the news. “It makes us feel we are not alone, and there is a resolution to these stories so we can express our anxiety that way,” she asserted.
“There is research on the impact of quarantine, there is research on the impact of a society-wide crisis, but there is no research on a pandemic outside of the Spanish flu,” she revealed.
She added that people do not understand what all these factors mean together but the junction makes it clear what people are facing is a level of trauma. Dr.Rutledge further said that meeting with friends over Zoom or watching films and TV shows is a great way to cope with mental stress.
The storyline of the movie ‘Contagion’ has an uncanny resemblance to our reality today. Similarly, the movie ‘Outbreak’ and ’12 Monkeys’ released in 1995 narrate the same spread of a disease that wipes out half of the planet.
