RAWALPINDI: An infant was reportedly kidnapped after the mother was duped that she would be provided free food rations.
The incident occurred at a shantytown on the central IGP road which divides the twin cities. A man and woman came to the area in a white car and told a poor woman that she would be provided rations if she agreed to come with them.
The needy woman carried her infant child, who was along with her, and sat in the car after which she was driven to Rehmanabad area. She was then instructed to go and provide her biometric fingerprints nearby before she could receive the rations.
When the woman returned, she was shocked to discover that the car and had disappeared, while her child was nowhere in sight. She raised alarm over her missing child after which police reached the site of the incident.
Police were unable to decide the jurisdiction in which the area was located and the remit of the police station where the case could be filed. Local police said the case should be registered in the Sabzi Mandi police station while others stated that it belonged to Rawalpindi.
This lead to a dispute as the victim’s family clashed with the police and a feud started. They staged a protest and burnt tyres on the main road demanding the kidnapped infant should be recovered. They complained that the police, rather than making effort to recover the child, is fighting over the case jurisdiction.
