KARACHI: A new data has revealed that around 150 people have been bitten by stray dogs in Sindh’s capital in the past four days.
The incidents occurred in Keamari, Malir, Surjani Town, and Mehmoodabad. Around 150 people including children were bitten by stray dogs. The data revealed that around 30 to 40 wounded people are brought to the Jinnah hospital every day.
One of the residents living in the Mehmoodabad area said that around 50 dogs roam in the streets, chasing passersby. “These dogs even chase men driving motorcycles,” a resident said.
In February, a six-year-old girl was attacked by a dog in Surjani Town. During the attack, she tried to scare the dog away by flinging mud at it but the animal was not deterred.
The number of stray dogs is increasing day by day that has become a serious problem for the citizens of Karachi. A total of 10,886 dog bite cases were treated at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center in Karachi last year. The cases have been going up every single year since 2011.
The government has been operating an anti-rabies campaign in the city where it vaccinates and neuters stray dogs. Initially, it was running a culling campaign but that was stopped later.
