The number of confirmed coronavirus cases reached 2 million globally today (Thursday), according to data from the Coronavirus Resource Centre at Johns Hopkins University.
On the other side, the global death toll from coronavirus has crossed 134,000, while more than 500,000 have recovered from the disease.
The first case of coronavirus originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan on 31st December 2019. Since then, it has spread to almost every country in the world, disrupting daily life for millions under lockdown measures meant to contain the virus’s rapid spread.
Iran’s Health Ministry informed that new deaths from the coronavirus remained in double figures for the second day in a row, as the country gradually reopens its sanctions-hit economy.
A health ministry spokesman said that another 1,512 people tested positive for the illness that took the total number of infections to 76,389.
The United Kingdom’s death toll from coronavirus rose by 761 to 12,868. The 761 rise is down from 778 in the previous period and a high of 980 on April 10. The UK’s health ministry informed that 313,769 people have been tested of which 98,476 tested positive.
The United States remains the worst-hit country from the novel coronavirus with more than 644,000 infections and more than 28,500 deaths.
The US President Donald Trump has said that the country has passed the peak of coronavirus infections and predicted that some states would reopen this month. Donald Trump said, “We will be back kids, all of us,” adding, “We want to get our country back.”
In Pakistan, the tally of coronavirus patients reached 6,300, with 3,016 cases reported in Punjab, 1,668 in Sindh, 912 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 281 in Balochistan, 237 in Gilgit-Baltistan, 140 in Islamabad, and 46 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
So far, the virus has claimed 118 lives while at least 1,446 coronavirus patients have recovered in the country.
