The number of coronavirus infection is constantly increasing in the United States as the country has surpassed Italy in the virus death toll. The US is now the new centre of the pandemic, with more than 500,000 cases and more than 20,000 deaths.
The United States has witnessed its highest death tolls to date in the epidemic with roughly 2,000 deaths a day reported for the last four days in a row, a plurality of them in and around New York City – the epicenter of coronavirus in US.
Amid coronavirus, US employment is rising at a jarring rate, with data released showing 17 million people have lost their jobs since Mid-March. That was the most job losses since the Great Recession and ended the longest employment boom in US history that started in late 2010. The most advanced country in the world is structurally ill-equipped to cope with such a crisis.
Even in this extraordinary time, US President Donald Trump wants life to return to normal as soon as possible. However, Public health experts have warned that the US death toll could reach 200,000 if unprecedented stay-at-home orders are lifted after 30 days.
An utter failure of leadership – the lack of will, intelligence, basic competence or even consistency on the part of the Trump administration – has turbocharged the problem. Even after the first infection was confirmed in the United States, the US president downplayed the crisis at every opportunity, fearing the impact on the economy.
However, the truth is that Donald Trump has finally acknowledged that the coming weeks will be very painful and that his inaction has made them much more so.
