Google paid tribute to Pakistani squash player Hashim Khan – widely revered as one of the sport’s all-time great – by customizing his very own doodle.
In his doodle, he can be seen hitting shots on the squash court at various stages of his life. Google also referred to him as one of the greatest players of all time.
The doodle is featured today (Saturday 4th April), the date known to mark the 1951 British Open Championship. Khan dominated his first appearance at the British Open and went on to take home the grand prize.
He returned to Pakistan as a national hero, with a million people greeting him upon his arrival. This victory became the first hurrah of the Khan family’s squash dynasty.
Over the next 46 years, the tournament was won 29 times by either Khan or one of his relatives, including renowned players Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan.
Hashim Khan’s story is not only praiseworthy but also inspiring as he started as a ball boy, fetching balls for squash players and cleaning the courts. He passed away in August 2004 due to heart failure.
