The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution urging for “intensified international cooperation” and “multilateralism” in the fight against coronavirus.
It was the first resolution adopted by the international body on the coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping the world.
The resolution, approved by consensus, also stresses the need for full respect for human rights and that there is no place for any form of discrimination, racism, and xenophobia in the response to the pandemic.
The UN resolution emphasises the central role of the body in the global health and economic crisis. It was submitted by Switzerland, Indonesia, Singapore, Norway, Liechtenstein and Ghana, and adopted by 188 of the 193 states that make up the body.
The resolution recognizes COVID-19’s “severe disruption to societies and economies, as well as to global travel and commerce, and the devastating impact on the livelihood of people,” and stresses that “the poorest and most vulnerable are the hardest hit” and must be helped.
Earlier this week, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that the novel coronavirus was the most challenging crisis the world has faced since World War II.
So far, coronavirus has claimed lives of more than 50,000 people around the globe and has affected more than 1 million people.
