ISLAMABAD: Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Chairperson Nasreen Azhar on Sunday demanded of the concerned institutions to give financial support to the daily waged workforce across the country.
In a statement she highlighted that the daily waged employees should be given salaries by the concerned private and government institutions amid coronavirus outbreak.
She said that it was sorely disappointed with the economic policies of the current government, which had failed to deliver for the majority population.
“It is time to shift priorities, from subsidizing rich persons and institutions in the name of stabilization and growth, to putting the wellbeing of ordinary citizens as well as daily waged workers at the centre of any policy planning.”
HRCP Chairperson added that the companies and entrepreneurs were frequently exploiting their workers in such difficult situation as they had to deal with a long list of challenges including health risks issues, random wages and other problems.
The HRCP head was of the view that instant food transfers should be organized for deserved people and daily- wage earners.
In addition, they should also make sure their access to free medical care in this testing time, she added.
She also demanded that health workers and doctors who were in the front-line while fighting in this fragile situation should also be facilitated.
She added that with schools, offices, shops and business completely closed across the country, the choice of working from home was a privilege accessible only to white-collar knowledge workers.
Azhar said lack of adequate social safety nets, such as paid leave and medical benefits was increasing the susceptibility of everyday bread winners in this calamity.
