The death toll from coronavirus in Italy leaped by 627 in a single day, by far the largest daily rise recorded anywhere.
Earlier on Thursday, Italy overtook China to register most deaths from the outbreak of highly contagious respiratory diseases, which has claimed lives of more than 4,000 people in the country.
This brings the total number of infected people from the deadly disease to 47,021. According to Italian newspaper, 16,020 people are in hospital, while more than 19,000 are reportedly self-isolating with symptoms.
National Health Institute of Italy claimed that the average age of those who died was 78.5 years, with the youngest victim aged 31 and the oldest 103. The median age was 80.
According to the ISS report – based on a survey of 3,200 of the dead – stated that men accounted for 70.6 percent of the deaths and women 29.4 percent.
After Japan, Italy has the oldest population in the world, with 23 percent of people aged over age 65.
The country imposed further draconian restrictions on public life in an increasingly desperate effort to curb the outbreak of the coronavirus.
