ISLAMABAD: Qatar has invited Pakistan to attend the peace signing deal between United States (US) and the Afghan Taliban to be held in Doha on February 29.
Qatari Ambassador to Pakistan Saqr Bin Mubarak invited Shah Mahmood Qureshi on behalf of the Qatari Foreign Minister during a meeting in Islamabad.
On this occasion, the Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan and Qatar have played a crucial role in furthering the Afghan reconciliation process.
FM Qureshi further said that Pakistan appreciated the peace deal between the United States and the Taliban. He also hoped that the peace deal will lead to the intra-Afghan dialogue.
Qureshi said it has always been the stance of Pakistan that there is no military solution to the Afghan conflict, adding that the international community is now also accepting Pakistan’s stance.
He said Pakistan and the Taliban had already called for the U.S. to resume Afghan peace talks as soon as possible.
Sources informed a peace deal could be signed this month, allowing removal of some of 12,000 U.S. military forces and thousands of other NATO troops that remain in Afghanistan following the U.S. intervention to oust the Taliban in 2001. Previous attempts to talks at peace agreements have been ended due to Taliban attacks.
