LONDON: A new research has stated that the consumption of antibiotic drugs during pregnancy could cause a birth defect in the unborn child.
The study from London College University found that the use of macrolides antibiotics during the first trimester of pregnancy increased the risk of birth defects in children.
The study showed the relationship between macrolides drugs and postpartum disorders such as heart disease and epilepsy. The study also estimated data on one million children born between 1990 and 2016 and stated that more than 82,000 children whose mothers were prescribed macrolide or penicillin before pregnancy at the risk of any birth defect.
Although some medications are considered safe to take during pregnancy, the effects of other medications on your unborn baby are unknown. According to the CDC, about two-thirds of women in the U.S. take one or more prescription medications during pregnancy.
