BEIJING: The death toll from the coronavirus epidemic jumped to 2,442 on Sunday after 97 more people had died in the epicenter of Hubei province.
According to the National Health Commission’s latest data another 648 new cases were reported in China.
The health authorities stated a huge majority of the deaths and new infections were in the hard-hit Hubei provincial capital of Wuhan, where the virus first surfaced in December 2019.
The National Health Commission said in its daily update the number of infections reported 76,936, in the country.
The number of new cases outside of Hubei reached 18, the lowest since the commission initiated publishing nationwide information. The nationwide death toll rose by 97 to 2,442, but only one new death was outside of the epicenter.
South Korea reported 123 more coronavirus cases, taking the nationwide total to 556, and two new deaths which bring the toll to four. In Italy recorded deaths of two people infected with COVID-19. Iran recorded a sixth death from COVID-19, as the disease is known.
The coronavirus has spread to more than 26 countries across the globe and is causing rising alarm due to new pockets of the outbreak in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
