PM’s Special Assistant Firdous Ashiq Awan defended the government’s new social media policy and said that the new policy created for the protection of citizens.
Addressing a press conference, Firdous Awan said that previously the government was unable to know the creator of fake pages that were harming the religious values, adding that new policies would be able to expose Pakistan’s opponent and to stop extremists who spread hate on religion and race.
She said that social media was disturbing the society through sexual abuse, pornography, child abuse, and hate speech, adding that the government will not take any steps that would harm the users’ interest.
Firdous Awan said that due to the non-availability of the offices of social media companies, government was unable to force these companies to remove harmful content, adding that after the new law, companies would establish offices in Pakistan which would bring them under Pakistan’s legal system.
The Special Assistant said that under the new law the social media companies would have right to challenge the authority’s decision if the decision will harm their interest.
The incumbent government has approved a new policy under which social media companies will have to establish registered offices with a physical address located in Islamabad within the next three months and to appoint a focal person.
