LAHORE: Today marks the second death anniversary of renowned lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir who also worked for human rights internationally.
Asma Jahangir, a human rights activist died two years ago from heart disease and is remembered for her efforts to uphold the rule of law and the stability of democracy in the country.
Asma Jahangir was born in Lahore on January 27, 1952, and later she studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary school. In 1978, Asma Jahangir acquired an LLB degree, and founded Advocacy and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and started the struggle for human rights for people.

When Asma Jahangir was 21 years old, her father was imprisoned by the dictator General Yahya Khan, She approached major lawyers for the release of her father, but Yahya Khan’s fears were overwhelming.
The lawyers refused to take the case of Asma Jahangir, on which she decided to come forward. The court also allowed her to fight a case to release her father.
Later with the release of his father, she made a historic decision to fight against dictatorship and declared it unconstitutional, after which martial law ended.
Asma Jahangir contested her last case two days before her death. On February 11, 2018, she suffered a fatal heart attack.
