ISLAMABAD: In occupied Kashmir, normal life remained further crippled due to complete shutdown on the occasion of the seventh death anniversary of Kashmiri leader, Muhammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged by the Indian authorities in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on this day in 2013.
According to reports, call for the shutdown has been requested by all Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq-led Hurriyat forum, the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front and other pro-freedom leaders and other organizations.
Meanwhile, all parties leaders have also requested for complete shutdown on 4th February on the occasion of the death anniversary of another important liberation leader, Muhammad Maqbool Butt.
India had hanged Muhammad Afzal Guru in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on 9th February 2013 and Muhammad Maqbool Butt in the same jail on 11th February 1984, for their role in Kashmir freedom movement. The Indian authorities refused to hand over the bodies to their families and buried them in the premises of the jail.
Tight steps have been taken in the name of security to prevent anti-India protests. Personnel of the Indian military and police have been deployed in all important places.
All shops and business establishments, as well as normal activities of daily life, were closed in Srinagar and other parts of the territory, while traffic is off on the road.
