KARACHI: Founder of the Journalism department at Karachi University Prof Shareef ul Mujahid passed away on Monday after a protracted illness.
His funeral prayer will offer at Karachi University’s Masjid-e-Ibrahim at 5:00 pm today and will be buried at the varsity’s graveyard.
The Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood Iraqi has expressed a deep sense of sorrow and grief on the sad demise of the globally acclaimed scholar.
He prayed for eternal peace to his soul and to bestow courage upon his mourners to bear this irreparable loss. VC said the efforts and services of Shareef ul Mujahid towards journalism and varsity will always be remembered.
Professor Sharif Al-Mujahid had founded the Journalism department at Karachi University in 1956 and remained the head of the department till 1969.
He was born on 1st July 1926 at Madras. He was also the author of several books. Prof. Sharif-al-Mujahid was a distinguished National Professor of Higher Education Commission, Pakistan. He was Honorary Director of Freedom Movement Archives, University of Karachi.
His education career as under B.A. (Hons.) (History), the University of Madras in 1949. M.A. (History), University of Madras 1950. M.A. (Journalism), Stanford University 1952. M.A. (Islamic) Magill University 1959. Ph.D. (ABD) (Mass Communication) Syracuse University 1967-70.
For his academic contribution over the past five decades, and intellectual expertise Professor Sharif al Mujahid was awarded Aizaz-e-Kamal, Fazilat in 2001, and Sitara-e-Imtiaz on 2006 by the Government of Pakistan.
