ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam–Fazl’s (JUI-F) leader Mufti Kifayatullah was taken into custody on Sunday by Islamabad police for issuing provocative remarks against state institutions.
Mufti Kifayatullah was held for 30 days under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) and shifted to Haripur jail. He was arrested from Islamabad’s E-11 area by Islamabad police after Mansera deputy police commissioner issued his arrest orders.
Deputy Secretary Information JUI-F Aslam Ghouri confirmed the news and said Mufti Kifayatullah was taken into custody last night.
Kifayatullah is the third leader to have been detained in the past few days ahead of JUI-F’s ‘Azadi March’ against the government.
DPO Masehra said that Mufti Kifayatullah was found involved in collecting donations, holding corner meetings, and inciting the public to take part in the Azadi March.
Therefore, Kifyatullah’s activities pose a grave threat to public safety which may create disturbance of public tranquility, danger to human life, health and safety. His actions were considered to affect the prevalent sectarian disharmony create a serious law and order situation.
The alleged arrest comes just days before the party’s Azadi March scheduled for October 31. The militant wing of JUI-F, Ansar-ul-Islam, has already been banned by the Interior Ministry.
JUI-F leader and former senator Hafiz Hamdullah’s Pakistan has reportedly been revoked and he has been declared an alien, while his computerised national identity card (CNIC) has also been cancelled.
Last week, another JUI-F leader Akram Khan Durrani received pre-arrest bail from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) over multiple inquiries initiated against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The Azadi March is set to begin today from Karachi led by JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
