Islamabad: Prime Minister Imran Khan took notice of corrupt practices at the security check posts on major highways and roads. PM Khan, has issued directives to all the heads of security agencies to reduce the security pickets.
“There is rampant rent-seeking from goods transporters in the country by the plethora of agencies/entities (such as police, excise, Customs, Rangers, Frontier Constabulary, Coast Guards etc), through the mechanism of check posts established on the National Highway,” read a notification issued on September 4.
The notification reads that several officials from different agencies are taking illegal benefits from the transporters. The Prime Minister directed the heads of different security agencies to reduce the security pickets.
Taking strict notice of the illegal and malafide practices, the Prime Minister has issued orders to authorities concerned to exercise the following at shortest possible time but no later than October 5.
i. Standard Operating Procedures be revised/developed by respective organisation/government to check and resolve this problem.
ii. Number of check posts be reduced where possible and rationalised in coordination with other stakeholders/organisations who have established check posts nearby and be converted into multi-agency common check posts.
iii. Supervisory role be made effective.
The issued order also stated that if the task is not completed in the given time frame, strict action will be taken against officials of the relevant departments.
