LOS ANGELES: Warner Bros. is delaying the release of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ to Christmas after the less-than-stellar debut of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’.
The postponement of the Wonder Woman sequel starring Scarlet Johansson been scheduled to hit theaters on 2nd October in an attempt to attract moviegoers during the pandemic.
Announcing the move to release ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ to 25th December, Warmer Bros. Motion Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement: “We’re very proud of the film and look forward to bringing it to audiences for the holidays.”
‘Tenet’ fared well in its international launch but found cinema sales were lower in the United States. Around 25 percent of US cinemas remain closed including in the top markets of Los Angeles and New York, while the rest are operating at reduced capacity.
‘Tenet’ grossed about $20 million in North America which included two weeks of showings in Canada, suggesting that audiences would follow new releases into theaters.
The postponement of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ suggests the Warner Bros. believes the current box office returns can sustain big-budget releases. ‘Tenet’ was produced on an extravagant budget of $200 million.
Universal Studios also pushed the Jordan Peele-produced thriller ‘Candyman’ from 16th October to sometime next year.
‘Wonder Woman 1984’ had been the next big-budget release. The delay now extends Marvel ‘Black Widow’ slated for release on 6th November.
