KARACHI: The Sindh government is reported to have written a letter to the provincial election commissioner, seeking to postpone the local body elections in Karachi and Hyderabad divisions which are originally scheduled to take place tomorrow (Jan 15).

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), it may be recalled, on Friday had rejected Sindh government’s move and decided to go ahead for Local Government elections as per schedule, i.e. January 15.

The letter addressed to the ECP cited security concerns, expressing apprehensions that any untoward incident could happen. The Sindh government, in its letter, has demanded of the ECP to postpone LG elections until and unless fool-proof security arrangements were in place.

This came after media reports in which secret agencies, in a meeting yesterday, expressed their grave concern about about security situation in the second phase of local body elections in Sindh, and reportedly recommended not to hold LG polls.
