NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been postponed and secluded for April 15 as India fights the outbreak of coronavirus.
The decision was taken at a meeting by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah in consultation with the Indian Premier League management. The Indian Premier League Governing Council is also calling a meeting on 14 March.
According to a statement by the BCCI, the BCCI management is concerned and aware of all its stakeholders and public health in general, and it is taking all essential measures to make sure that, all people related to IPL including fans have a safe cricketing experience.
The event will in all likelihood have a changed format to make it shorter and still might end up being played behind closed doors, without spectators.
Earlier the Indian government had imposed a ban on IPL matches in the city amid precautionary measures and control of the outbreak of the epidemic disease.
According to Indian health officials, the number of coronavirus patients in the country is 76, including the death of a 76-year-old man in Karnataka on Friday. It said the man from Kalaburagi had recently arrived from Saudi Arabia.
