KARACHI: According to according to this year’s Global Hunger Index (GHI), Pakistan is ranked 94th on a list featuring 117 countries.
In 2017, out of 119 countries, Pakistan stood at 106. The index uses four indicators namely the proportion of the malnourished population, the frequency of child mortality, the stuntedness of children and the height to weight ratios of children.
However, Pakistan has gradually improved its rank in the four indicators of the Global Hunger Index.
India is behind Pakistan and other neighbouring countries Nepal, and Bangladesh in a list of 117 countries that track hunger and malnutrition.
Concern Worldwide US CEO Colleen Kelly said, “Hunger stubbornly persists in many countries and is actually increasing in others. Multiple countries have higher hunger levels now than in 2010, and approximately 45 countries are set to fail to achieve low levels of hunger by 2030.”
According to reports, among the 117 countries, 43 have serious levels of hunger. The report reveals that the situation in the Central African Republic is extremely alarming while Chad, Madagascar, Yemen, and Zambia are witnessing an alarming level of hunger.
The GHI is a tool designed to comprehensively measure and track hunger at the global, regional, and country levels.
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) calculates GHI scores each year to assess progress, or the lack thereof, in combating hunger.
