KARACHI: Players from the Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators have paid tributes to Pakistan’s top mountaineer Ali Sadpara and the late chairman of Quetta Gladiators Jamshed Omar.
According to PCB, “A minute’s silence was observed today in honor of ace mountaineer Ali Sadpara, who passed away during his K2 winter summit & Mr Jamshed Omar, Chairman of Quetta Gladiators.”
The PCB said along with a video of the players observing a minute’s ahead of the opening game of the Pakistan Super League. The minute-long silence was observed after the end of the opening ceremony.
On Thursday, the three climbers were officially declared dead. Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Minister Raja Nasir Ali Khan, Ali Sadpara’s son, Sajid Sadpara and families and friends of the climbers were also present in the presser held in Skardu.
Sajid Sadpara said he is now sure that Muhammad Ali Sadpara and other mountaineers could not make it out alive and had met an accident. Sajid Ali Sadpara said, “Pakistan has lost a great mountaineer, my father and two other climbers are no more with us.”
On February 4, Sadpara, Snorri and Mohr lost contact with the base camp and were reported missing a day later after their support team stopped receiving communications from them. The three men were last seen at the Bottleneck barely 400 meters below the summit of the Savage Mountain.
It is believed the group reached the summit but encountered a problem on the way down. Pakistan Army started a search operation to trace the missing mountaineers. However, the search was hampered due to harsh weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the President of Pakistan Arif Alvi has also expressed condolences to Muhammad Ali Sadpara’s family as well as the families of the other climbers. In a tweet, he paid tribute to Sadpara, saying “he battled nature with strength, fortitude and heroism.”
