JAMSHORO: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has ordered an inquiry into the death of four coal miners in Jamshoro and action against the mine lease owner and relevant authorities.
Sindh government spokesman said the chief minister took notice of today’s incident and ordered an inquiry into it on his recommendations.
He stated that the chief minister also ordered action against the relevant authorities and the mine lease owner. He said that ensuring the safety of the coal mine workers was the responsibility of the mine owner and the contractor. At least four labourers died after falling from a height of 400 feet in a coal mine in Jamshoro on Wednesday.
According to police sources, the incident took place when the miners walked into an elevator to excavate coal but unfortunately, it suddenly fell from a height of 400 feet.
Police further said that the elevator fell when its ropes broke in Lakhra coal mine. Soon after the incident, rescue officials rushed to the scene and retrieved the bodies after five hours of hectic efforts.
Earlier, at least seven labourers had lost their lives and three others sustained injuries following a blast inside a coal mine in Quetta’s Degari area in Balochistan.
Rescue officials had said the deceased and wounded labourers were shifted to the hospital. Sources had said the labourers were called at the duty despite the workers had been sent on leaves.
According to Pakistan Central Miners Labour Federation, an average of 200 deaths annually occurred in Pakistan due to coal mine explosions.
