ISLAMABAD: The opposition-led Pakistan Democratic Movement will hold its first meeting today at Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) secretariat.
PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said the first meeting will be held at 3:00 PM at the PML-N Secretariat to consider the situation after the arrest of Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting will be attended by leaders of various political parties.
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) has proposed the name of Maulana Fazlur Rehman to lead the multi-party alliance. However, the move has been opposed by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) who has suggested that the leadership of the opposition should decide the matter.
Last weekend, PML-N supremo and former Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif telephoned Maulana Fazlur Rehman to discuss the formation of a committee for resignations from the assemblies.
During the phone call, the two leaders discussed the political situation in the country and the opposition’s movement against the government. The situation after the APC and the opposition’s future action plan were also discussed.
There was also consultation on the formation of a committee for resignations from assemblies and on the leadership of the opposition’s Pakistan Democratic Movement alliance.
Last week, the opposition-led All Parties Conference (APC) had announced to form the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) aimed at jointly launching a countrywide protest.
A 26-point resolution passed by the multiparty conference was read out by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman while flanked by opposition leaders including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Shehbaz Sharif and others.
The handout issued by the APC announced country-wide protests with its first phase beginning in October and November with mass protests in major cities of the country. In the next phase, the public gatherings will be held in provincial capitals of the country, the handout detailing the action plan read.
The opposition parties would further take out a long march towards Islamabad besides also announcing to utilize all options against the government including bringing no-confidence motion and resignations at the appropriate time from the assemblies.
